What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine which treats patients using the insertion of needles into specific points on the body. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, a network of energy, or Qi (Chi), circulates throughout the body along various pathways or meridians. The Qi flows like an electric current, and different meridians regulate different internal functions of the body, such as the heart, liver, kidney, and lungs. Acupuncture points are located along the meridians, and acupuncture is a treatment for restoring imbalances in the Qi.

How can acupuncture improve my well-being?

In order for the body to function in a healthy manner, the Qi must be able to move smoothly, with the appropriate strength and balance. When the flow of Qi is obstructed due to a variety of factors – stress, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, external trauma, use of drugs, etc. – negative physical symptoms begin to appear.

Acupuncture treatment involves accessing the Qi by needling certain points. This increases the flow of Qi, gradually removing the obstacles and restoring the body to a healthy state.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognised acupuncture as an effective treatment for many of the following ailments and conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Cancer
  • Immune imbalances
  • Alzheimer’s and Dementia
  • Chronic pains in the neck, shoulders, back, elbow, knee, ankle
  • Arthritis
  • Anxiety and seasonal depression
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Stress

  • Abnormal weight gain
  • Stroke
